Smart Ways to Keep Your Knees Happy

It seems like every other person we meet has a knee issue or painful story. Researchers on tell us 34 percent of Americans over the age of 50 have chronic knee or leg pain. Seven million Americans have knee replacements annually.

But before you give up, knee surgeons tell us there are options out there that skip knee surgery entirely. One of the big ones can be found in chiropractic treatment. Visiting your chiropractor and learning more about the knee can be a great first step. Why? Good thing you asked.

Learn how the knee works. The knee may look simple but it’s one of the largest, most complex joints in the human body. There are many ways to run into knee pain — arthritis, ligament tears, cysts in the back of the knee, kneecap pain, or trauma to knee bones, ligaments and tendons. But the real question is what to do? Chiropractic treatments offer a viable alternative, postponing or elimination of the need for surgery.

Lighten up and relieve your knees. For each pound your body carries, your knees feel four times the pressure!  If you weigh 200 pounds, 800 pounds impacts your knees with every step you take. That pressure then goes up in climbing stairs, playing tennis or jogging. Just losing 10 pounds will subtract 40 pounds of the knee pressure. Start using smaller plates and cutting portions in half. Your knees will love it.

Drink a lot of water. Then drink more. All knees contain spongy tissue called cartilage at the ends of the joints. Cartilage makes pain free movement possible. Up to 80 percent of cartilage is water.  As we age, that water content often shrinks, speeding up degenerative joint disease. Drink a glass when you get up in the morning, and before and after each meal.

Keep moving, however you can. Doctors tell us cartilage depends on movement to stay alive and healthy, circulating vital nutrients. Start slow and keep building, working your way up to 30 minutes a day, five days a week. Warm up with stretching, choose moderate activity and play music to stay motivated. But whatever you do, keep moving.
