De Zavala FAQ

What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic has been helping people with musculoskeletal pain for over 110 years. Medical studies have shown that chiropractic can be effective at treating back pain, sciatica, neck pain, dizziness, and even high blood pressure. Millions of people have benefited from the natural approach of chiropractic.

The word chiropractic comes from the Greek “chiros” and “praktikos,” meaning “done by hand.” The technique of chiropractic was first developed by DD Palmer in 1895, and the theory of chiropractic was based on the concept that dysfunction in the spine can alter the function of the nervous system and create pain and illness.
Since 1895, our knowledge of neurology and biochemistry has grown exponentially, and over the last 20 years, modern science has made great strides in explaining how chiropractic works.

What is an Adjustment?

An adjustment is a specific force, done by hand or instrument, which allows a chiropractor to manipulate the joints of the body. A chiropractor will feel a joint and judge if it is moving the way it should and adjust it to allow for proper function and movement

What is Chiropractic Maintenance?

Maintenance therapy is defined as a treatment plan that seeks to prevent disease, promotes health, and prolong and enhance the quality of life; or therapy that is performed to maintain or prevent deterioration of a chronic condition. The frequency of chiropractic maintenance visits is determined by you and the chiropractic physician.

In many cases, you might not even realize your spine is misaligned, because you may not be experiencing pain. But misalignments can lead to a gradual deterioration of your health and well-being. This is where your Chiropractor can help. By correcting spinal mis-alignments and removing the interference in your nervous system, your Chiropractor can help your body function more efficiently on all levels. And while pain often motivates people to seek the help of a Chiropractor, you do not have to be in pain or discomfort to benefit from Chiropractic adjustments. In fact, ongoing chiropractic care may promote your body’s ability to heal itself and may lead to decreased incidences of certain ailments and injuries, while helping you reach and maintain your optimal health goals.

When will I start feeling better?

That depends on the person and how well they respond to chiropractic care, a person might feel better right away or it could take a few visits.

How many adjustments does a typical person need?

Adjusting joints is an accumulative effect. Each adjustment adds on to the last one. If all areas of your body are in optimum operating status the adjustments can last for months. If you have some weakness or postural or positioning disadvantages, then the adjustment can last as short as 1 day.

If I stop feeling pain, do I need to keep coming?

That is completely up to each individual. If your looking to maintain the decrease in pain or no pain, then a maintenance / wellness care program is what The Joint offers.

Do I need X-Rays?

If you have a condition that needs further evaluation then x-rays may be indicated. For example if you have recently been involved in an auto accident or some sort of trauma. At the Joint, we provide maintenance / wellness care, we do not provide or do x-rays, if they are needed we would refer you out for those services.

Chiropractic can help with a multitude of health conditions: back pain, musculoskeletal conditions, migraine, headaches and many more.

Do adjustments hurt?

Adjustments shouldn’t hurt. However, everyone reacts differently to an adjustment and you may be sore afterwards. It’s like going to the gym, if it’s been a while, you will likely be sore; if you haven’t been adjusted in a while (or have never been adjusted) you may experience soreness.

If you do feel sore after following an adjustment, please let me know and I can do other things and try my best to make sure you walk out feeling better than you did walking in.

Can I get a friend to crack my back?

As a chiropractor, I was taught when and when not to adjust.
