How Nutrition Relates to Chiropractic Care

Healthy foods are vitalChiropractic care is becoming such a popular discipline of alternative medicine because of its ability to touch on so many different aspects of our overall health. There is surely a focus on musculoskeletal health, and when we go to the chiropractor, our frame of reference usually tells us that we are going solely to treat musculoskeletal injuries and prevent injury in the initial phases. However, chiropractic care can do much more for us that simply align our spines and help us avoid back pain.

We are seeing an immense growth in multi-faceted chiropractic care facilities. These clinics offer patients chiropractic care as well as wellness counseling, mainly framed around nutrition. The relationship between what we put into our bodies and our musculoskeletal health, is quite direct and has been identified as strong by countless research studies in recent years and over time.

If we are eating too many saturated fats, sugars, and processed foods, we are likely to gain weight and put more stress on our musculoskeletal system. These foods also lead to decreased neurological communication, leading to pain and the tendency for alignment of the bones and muscles to deteriorate. These are just some of the problems that we see in terms of nutrition impacting musculoskeletal health, and chiropractors are not willing to stand idly by while their patients are enacting behaviors that directly contribute to poor outcomes.

At chiropractic clinics, with or without arms that focus on nutrition, there is the opportunity and the resources that can help us turn our diets around. Chiropractors receive a lot of training and education in the sciences as well as in nutrition over the course of their academic pathway and training, and many are readily available for consultation on nutrition as well as performing chiropractic adjustments. They can help us form nutritional strategies and change our perspective on dieting to promote better overall health outcomes.

This is just one area of the fusion of chiropractic care and overall health and wellness and while there are many more, it may be one of the biggest determinants of our ability to sustain musculoskeletal health and prevent injury and illness. Proper nutrition is one of the only ways to make sure the body is functioning at optimal levels. As chiropractic relates to the human body as a whole, one area that is out of whack can lead to problems elsewhere.
