Neck pain is sneaky. At first, it may just be as a small twinge that comes and goes. Then it may show up every day.
But gradually it gains traction and settles in, sticking with you, as you reach for the phone, or work at your computer. Then it follows you home.
When I had a bout with neck pain, I found myself becoming very irritable, trying one solution after another, and growing increasingly frustrated.
There Are Answers
Starting with ways to soothe the pain, and then following through with a visit to the chiropractor, neck pain can be tracked and treated.
Arthritis or degenerative disc disease, poor posture, stress, lack of sleep and loss of muscle strength can all contribute to your neck pain. But if you develop serious symptoms with radiating pain, weakness, numbness of limbs, or fever, get prompt ER or medical treatment.
As you deal with ongoing neck pain, healthharvard.edu suggests some simple steps to ease the pain.
Keep Moving: Avoid getting stuck in unhealthy positions in front of your screen or on the phone. Practice good posture and add a few chair exercises or 15-minute morning break stretching routines to avoid stiffness.
Fix Your Workplace: Make sure your computer monitor is at eye level and you are sitting up straight with your back supported and your feet flat on the floor. Consider using a headset for your phone and make sure tablets are positioned upright instead of lying flat.
Check Your Glasses: Keep your eye checkups current with new prescriptions to avoid peering at the screen and bending forward as you work.
Check Pillows and Mattress: Make sure your mattress is smooth and firm and avoid using too many pillows. Extra pillows tend to put the neck in awkward positions.
Protect Your Neck: Don’t just assume you can tote heavy bags or move large pieces of furniture without considering the impact on your back and neck. Best advice: Get help and skip the possibility of ongoing future neck or back pain. Also lighten your totes, only carrying necessary essentials.
Make Rest a Priority: Whatever else is happening in your life, try to level things out, making a good night’s sleep a regular occurrence. Look for solutions to financial, family or work pressures and consider stress reduction breathing, meditation or yoga classes. The less stress you have the happier your neck will be.
