The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Global Nutrition

In many cases, it requires the backing of a significantly influential organization to take the lead in dealing with efforts towards improving a certain health outcome worldwide. With respect to global nutrition, this problem has been quite difficult to solve even though there has been the involvement of countless organizations in the developing crisis. Global nutrition has recently received a whole new level of attention from the world’s largest privately owned and operated foundation, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

This foundation has played a role in so many different health and wellness campaigns throughout the world. Its substantial financial capabilities combined with the wide-ranging network of resources it has make the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation one of the most powerful stakeholders in global health. There is also a developed relationship between the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and various political figures, both current and past. For example, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has a great rapport with former president Bill Clinton and his Clinton Health Access Initiative, which has aligned goals in nutrition.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is commonly associated with infections and tropical disease control, namely malaria. Millions of dollars have be allocated to the cause of global malaria prevention with bed nets, vaccines, and other care provisions being sent to developing countries almost constantly. At this juncture, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has reframed their focus, citing that improving global nutrition can lead to increased performance in other areas of development.

In increasing the emphasis placed on nutrition, the foundation is developing a new perspective on nutrition and how poor nutrition and food access can lead to lowered socioeconomic status. This is not only a problem in developing countries, as even here in the United States we see a significant lack of access to healthy food and fresh produce. But unfortunately, smaller countries with poor farming infrastructure or that simply struggle with nutrition and food access. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is trying to make a big difference in these places.
