The Tiny Fruit Sending You Soundly (& Safely) Off To Sleep

Trying to get to sleep can be difficult for us all at times, and there are a number of tried and tested remedies that we all swear by in order to help us catch some Z’s. Whether you’re a warm glass of milk fan or a nice chamomile tea aficionado, there are a number of strange but effective ways out there to help us fall asleep.


Now there’s yet another proven method that can help you fall asleep; but not only has it been proven to do that, it is also proven to help you fall asleep faster, and stay that way for longer. New and groundbreaking research was recently presented at the Experimental Biology 2014 meeting showing that simply by drinking tart cherry juice twice a day, a person is capable of sleeping up to 90 more minutes each night.

Testing was conducted on participants in a few different studies before the findings were presented. Researchers from Louisiana State University gave eight ounces of tart cherry juice to seven test participants, twice a day for fourteen days. Then another fourteen days were followed up immediately after, all without any cherry juice. Consuming the cherry juice yielded results that proved that participants received an average of around 85 extra minutes of sleep, when compared to their regular sleeping patterns without the juice twice a day. 

How Does it Work?

Cherry juice is a natural source of melatonin which aids in relaxation and deeper sleeping cycles; it also has traces of tryptophan, the amino acid that helps release hormones when the body is tired and needs rest.

Cherries are red due to the pigments within the outer layer called proanthocyanidins. This outer layer contains an anti-inflammatory enzyme, which breaks the tryptophan and melatonin down in the body much faster, therefore allowing the body to rest for longer periods of time when at rest.

More than 25 percent of the U.S. adult population suffers from some form of insomnia, and tart cherry juice (particularly from the Montmorency cherry) can drastically shrink these numbers permanently. Drinking the fruit juice is the newest wave in revolutionary, non-invasive alternatives to dangerous sleep sedatives with scary side effects. 

Alternative Methods

If you’re not a tart cherry juice fan, you may want to try your luck at kiwi instead if you’re looking for a safe alternative to medications. Consuming just two kiwi fruits roughly one hour prior to heading off to sleep has been shown to increase the time of sleep by up to 15 percent.
